Elton Hall and Gardens

Elton Hall and Gardens

Elton PE8 6SH, England

URPoint Details

The Hall was built in 1474 for Sir Richard Sapcote and remained empty for many years.
Sir Thomas Proby rebuilt and remodelled the Hall and still remains very much the family home. The stone used to rebuild this gracious building came from the estate and some of the timber came from Chesterton in 1807.
The gatehouse and vaulted crypt built of Barnack stone remain from the original mansion which is set in beautiful wooded parkland.
There are some wonderful arts, treasure and portraits in the Hall. The library is a fascinating place and contains rare books including a magnificent collection of Bibles, a Caxton and a prayer book belonging to Henry VIII.

The gardens are magnificent and the Victorian Rose garden has over 1000 rose bushes. Knott Garden, Sunken Garden and herbaceous borders make this a delightful walk.
