URPoint Details

When the Normans were here the village was called Helenestow, it is a picturesque village where old thatch cottages lean and overhang the cobbled winding streets.

Nearby is the Moot Hall, with an exhibition of Bunyan's life and times and a delightful row of Tudor cottages restored to look the way they would have been in Bunyan's life and times.

On the green isthe stump of a cross marks the site where the nuns held a fair each May. It wason this green that John Bunyan heard the Voice from heaven saying "Wiltthou leave thy sins and go to heaven, or have thy sins and go to hell?" and where he first questioned his way of life.

'Vanity Fair' was based on thecharacters and the people he knew and met in this place.

Elstow Cottages are a delightful row of Tudor cottages restored to look the way they would have been in Bunyan's day.
