Although not open to the public, Chequers, the country residence of British Prime Ministers lies near the village. This 16th century mansion, donated to the nation by Lord Lee of Fareham in 1917, can be viewed from the numerous footpaths surrounding it.
The 13th century manor house was rebuilt by Sir William Hawtrey in the 15th century and in one of the great fireplaces are entwined the initials A H and W H. The sister of Lady Jane Grey, Lady Mary was confined here in disgrace by Elizabeth I after her secret marriage to Thomas Keys who died in prison.
