URPoint Details
Guided tours; gift shop; tearoom; toilets and car park.
Set on an islet (connected by a causeway) in Loch Duich, this is probably one of the most picturesque castles. The castle one of the most photographed has been inhabited since 1214.
It passed into the hands of the Mackenzies of Kintail who later became the Earls of Seaforth. Garrisoned in 1719 by the Spanish Jacobite troops it was blown up by an English man o'war.
Now completely restored, it incorporates war memorial to the Clan Macrae who held it as hereditary Constables on behalf of the Mackenzies.
