The village stands by the Eden Water, spanned by a bridge bearing a plaque laid in 1952 to H F Lyte and an obelisk at Ferniehill to James Thomson.
Two well known authors were born here including James Thomson (the Seasons and Rule Britannia) and Henry Francis Lyte who wrote ‘Abide with me’.
