Edmondthorpe - Church of St Michael and All Angels
Main St, Edmondthorpe LE14 2JU, England
URPoint Details
St Michael and All Angel's Church, is a large, well proportioned building which stands close to the ruins of Edmondthorpe Hall. Like so many in the country the church dates from the 13th century with 15th century additions, reflecting wealth from wool at the latter date. Unusual features are the quatrefoil openings at ground level in the chancel - never satisfactorily explained. In the south aisle is a fine series of seventeenth and eighteenth century monuments to the Smith family. The three tier tomb of Sir Roger Smith carries effigies of his two wives. One of the two, Dame Ann, was thought to be a witch with power to turn into a cat.
