The 6th Duke of Devonshire and saw that the magnificent view of the park was blocked by the village….so he moved it. The village was moved around 1839 by the duke’s gardener Joseph Paxton who was given the task of moving it to a new site to the west of Chatsworth Park.
No two houses are alike, designed by John Robertson of Derby he styled a Swiss-chalet, Italian-styled windows, Jacobean gables, Tudor chimneys and Georgian doorways.
The Church of St Peter was rebuilt on its original site 25 years after the village had been moved. It was designed by Sir George Gilbert Scott in the Early English style giving it a great tower, and soaring spire.
