Birthplace of Thomas Carlyle born here in the Arched House in 1795, he also died here in 1881.
In the churchyard are the graves of Thomas Carlyle's parents and that of Archibald Arnott, doctor to Napoleon when on St Helena.
To the east is the Roman station of Birrens.
Dating from the 1st and 2nd centuries AD, it was in 1895 the first Roman fort in Scotland to be extensively excavated
