Eaton (Leicestershire)

Eaton , England

URPoint Details

Eaton is an attractive stone conservation village located on a hillside in the Leicestershire Wolds. It lies on the Jubilee Way, a fifteen and a half-mile footpath that leads from Melton Mowbray to Brewer's Grave near Woolsthorpe-by-Belvoir.

The site of St Denys's Church standing on an ironstone bluff above the village is its chief attraction and is built of the local ironstone. Iron ore was still quarried in the area until the middle of the twentieth century. The structure with its weather-worn tower and spire dates from the twelfth and fifteenth centuries. The Church is open daily all year.

The author of Old Moore's Almanac once lived in a cottage on Main Street, and his gravestone can be seen in the churchyard.
