URPoint Details
When the Norman baron William de Cantilupe acquired the manor of Eytone in 1205, he was given permission to build himself a castle on condition that he first rebuild the parish church. He fulfilled both conditions, although only the water-filled moat remains to mark the site of the castle.
There are some lovely timber framed houses and cottages in the village.
St Mary's Church was built with stone from Totternhoe in the 15th century in the Early English style.
The interior has some fine arcading, and there is some marvellous 13th century iron scrolls on the south door, and some fine foliage carving on the nave pillars.
The tower dates back to 1320 and the nave is early 13th century.
