URPoint Details
Only a mile and a half separate the two villages of East and West at the northern end of the Quantock Hills, with woodland and moorland walks and magnificent views across the Bristol Channel to Wales.
East Quantoxhead is an idyllic village with a cluster of squat, deeply thatched cottages by the duck pond.
The medieval Court House is the home of the Luttrell family who have links with the village for more than 700 years. The partly Jacobean manor has later additions dated 1610.
No part of the parish has been sold since it was granted by William the Conqueror to Ralph Paganel, a direct ancestor of the Luttrells through a Paganel daughter.
The 13th century Church of St Mary was largely rebuilt in the 15th century.
The porch has a ‘coffin squint’ an aperture through which the waiting priest could watch for the approach of the funeral party. There are some fine medieval panels, carved bench-ends and several memorials and one to a rector here for 71 years.
West Quantoxhead
There are some handsome houses and an imposing Tudor style mansion of the same pinkish-buff stone as the Church of St Etheldreda, also called St Audrey, which has an elegant tapering spirelet.
