A village dominated by the ruins of the 13th century Hailes Castle, another of the places where Mary, Queen of Scots stayed in 1567 when fleeing from the hostile Scottish lords.
Situated on the River Tyne which flows here through a miniature gorge and is crossed by a 16th century bridge.
John Rennie the famous engineer and bridge builder was born in 1761 at Phantassie.
The Rennie memorial is situated beside the East Linton by-pass.
