The 12th Earl of Eglinton set about creating an 18th century village with some of the houses dating from late in the 18th century.
The Parish Church dates from 1790 and has an eagle on its spire and in the churchyard is a Covenanters grave.
It was here in 1941 that Rudolph Hess the deputy German Fuehrer landed here by air.
To the southwest crossed by the Kilmarnock road is Eaglesaham Moor over 900ft high.
Beyond the Lochgoin Reservoir and across the Ayrshire border is a Covenanters memorial to John Howie erected in 1896.
