URPoint Details
Disabled car park about 100 yards from the site. The site with its wheel can be viewed from the road. The monument itself is awkward to visit, with many steps and levels.
Dyfi Furnace is probably the best-preserved charcoal burning furnace in Britain, built about 1755 for a firm of enterprising West Midlands ironmasters, to exploit charcoal produced from the surrounding woods. This fuelled the furnace, which was blown to blast heat by two great bellows, themselves powered by a water wheel. The furnace smelted iron ore from the Lake District, turning out 'pig iron' for Midlands forges.
