Duxford - Church of St John

Duxford - Church of St John

Green St, Duxford , England

URPoint Details

St John's Church (Cambridgehire Historic Churches Trust).

In its delightful village setting, St John's has been used rarely since 1874, when the two Duxford livings were amalgamated. It escaped Victorian restoration and we are left with a rare and atmospheric medieval survival of great beauty, with much to see of many periods.

The Norman, central tower was heightened around 1280 and then given its 'Hertfordshire spike'. The Lady Chapel displays rich and exquisite 14th century architecture. Inside are medieval roofs and benches, 17th century rails and pulpit and above all the remarkable series of wall-paintings from the 12th century onwards, now being revealed and conserved.
