A crafting community which is also a tourist centre with good trout and salmon fishing.
Balanakeil northwest is a craft village where pottery and paintings are produced. Balnakeil church built in 1619 has a monument to Gaelic poet Rob Donn Calder sometimes called the Burns of the North who died in 1778.
In the limestone cliffs is the Smoo Cave which is entered under a ‘Gothic’ arch 33ft high and 130ft wide. The first chamber is 203ft long and can be visited by boat, but the two inner chambers are for experienced pot-holers only. Two miles further on the road turns south to Loch Eriboll is where you can watch Atlantic grey seals during the last four months of the year.
