URPoint Details
Durham is dominated by the castle and the cathedral sitting on top of a rocky outcrop above the winding River Wear. The cobbled street leading up from the river to the castle and cathedral are cobbled and there are some fascinating buildings and shops.
Durham Castle is unique as this stronghold never fell to the Scots.
The Cathedral is magnificent and is dedicated to two saints – one at either end. St Cuthbert is one and the other is the Venerable Bede.
There is an interesting signpost for ‘Pity Me’ 2¼ miles on the Great North Road. The name is thought to be derived from Petit Mer, a name originally given to a small lake by French Monks.
