Dunure Castle (Dunoure - hill or 'fort of the yew tree') was the scene of torture of the Abbot of Crossraugel (Allan Stewart) by the 4th Earl of Cassillis in 1570 when he roasted him and basted his feet, to make him give up his abbey lands. He was finally rescued by his brother-in-law after signing over the abbey and its lands.
The castle dates from the late 13th century the earliest charter for the lands dating from 1256, but the remains of the building are of the 15th and 16th century."
