URPoint Details
A picturesque resort 7 miles southwest of Ayr in a delightful setting of the Ayrshire coast, with the ruined castle of Dunure and a lovely rock garden built by an Ayrshire naturalist
The ancient castle was once a Kennedy stronghold and was a refuge for Mary, Queen of Scots.
The history of Dunure Castle has it that it was the scene of torture on the Abbot of Crossraugel by the 4th Earl of Cassillis in 1570 when he roasted him, to make him give up his abbey lands.
