An easy, but bracing, coastal walk leads to the eerie skeleton of this wonderful sited on a basalt crag. Built in 1316 by Thomas Earl of Lancaster and enlarged later by John of Gaunt.

The dramatic ruin encloses 11 acres of dolerite promontory with sea cliffs to the north and rises up more than 100feet from the waves of the North Sea crashing on the rocks below.

The large gatehouse, which later became the keep, and curtain walls can be seen.
