URPoint Details
Priory Church of St Peter, an Augustine church founded in 1131 by Henry I. This much photographed west front has an original Norman doorway and Early English additions made after the collapse of the north-west tower in a storm in 1222. The interior is dominated by massive Norman pillars which extend unusually to the triforium level. The font dating from the 12th century belongs to the well known Aylesbury group of fonts. Chancel screen of five open arches is early 15th century and there are two fine sets of modern stained glass windows by John Hayward. The Archway into the Great Courtyard still stands; mounds of grass-covered rubble outline the original plan of the main convent buildings, of which only the hospitium (inn) remains. Henry VIII divorced Catherine of Aragon in this building.
Grade I listed building on 25 October 1951.
