A pleasant market town at the foot of Duns Law which rises over 700ft on which the town was originally built before being destroyed by the English in 1545.

On the summit of the hill is a Covenanter’s Stone commemorating General Leslie’s army in 1639.

There is fine fishing for brown trout in the rivers Blackadder and Whiteadder.

The parish church dates from 1790 and the town hall dates from the 19th century.

To the northwest rise the foothills of the Lammermuirs where two narrow roads, the westerly gives access to Longformacus and to the east the valley of the Whiteadder Water to Cranshaws.

To the south is Nisbet House which dates from the 17th and 18th century and is notable for its gun loops.

To the east is the delightful mansion of Manderston with its fine gardens.
