A spectacular ruin 160ft above the North Sea was an impregnable fortress to the Earls Marischals of Scotland.
The oldest parts are the tower and the chapel dating from around 1392 and the fine gate-house from 1575.
Montrose besieged the castle in 1645 during the Commonwealth Wars and was the site for the successful protection of the Scottish crown jewels against the might of Cromwell’s army before they were removed to Kinneff church where they were hidden behind the pulpit.
