The town overlooks Dunnet Bay with a sandy beach and to the north is St John’s Loch. A couple of miles northwest of the loch is Dunnet Head a bold promontory with a lighthouse on the most northerly part of the mainland. Across the waters of the stormy Pentland Firth can be seen The Old Man of Hoy. The little Presbyterian Church of Dunnet with its saddleback tower dates from about the 14th century.
