URPoint Details
The remains of a Benedictine abbey founded by Queen Margaret in the 11th century, the foundations of the church lie under the present nave built in the 12th century in the Romanesque style.
At the east end are the remains of St Margaret's shrine, dating from the 13th century.
Robert the Bruce is buried in the choir, now the site of the present parish church (closed in winter). Of the monastic buildings, the ruins of the refectory, pend and guest house remain. The guest house was later reconstructed as a royal palace where Charles I was born.
