Seven Scottish kings are buried in this ancient Royal Burgh and here in the magnificent abbey lie Malcolm III, Edgar, Alexander I, David I, Malcolm IV, Alexander III, and Robert I (Robert Bruce).
Dunfermline was for six centuries the capital of Scotland and the abbey was the first Benedictine abbey to be built in Scotland for Margaret who was the Saxon wife of Malcolm IV.
James I was born here in 1394 and also Charles I in 1600 and his sister Elizabeth.
Andrew Carnegie was also born here in a small cottage in 1835.
The attractive Pittencrief Glen with its splendid flower garden was presented to the town by Carnegie in 1903.
Southwest of the town is Pitfirraine Castle which retains its 15th century tower.
