URPoint Details
For centuries wars have been fought between the Scots and the English here to control the area.
Kenneth I sacked the town eleven hundred years ago and was the first person to rule over both the Scots and Picts.
Another such war was in 1338 when Black Agnes defended Dunbar for six weeks against the Earl of Salisbury whilst her husband was away.
The bloodiest battle was fought in 1650 when the Covenanters outnumbering Cromwell’s Roundheads by two to one, had them trapped in town. However the Scots recklessly left a strong position unguarded and Cromwell re-took Dunbar.
The harbour was built using money from Cromwell, and he may have regretted doing this!
