Dumbarton

Dumbarton , Scotland

URPoint Details

An important ship building town and Royal Burgh, standing at the point where the River Leven joins the mighty Clyde.

In medieval times this was the capital of the ancient area known as Strathclyde which extended from the Clyde as far as Lancashire.

St Patrick is reputed to have been born here and later taken to Ireland by raiders.

Probably the most well known landmarks are the Rock and the Castle.

A sundial in the ruins of the castle recalls the date when Mary, Queen of Scots at six years of age sailed to France in 1548.

Ship building was carried out here during the 19th century and the famous clipper ‘Cutty Sark’ was built in the dockyards in 1869.
