This little town at the junction of the Fiddich River and Dullan Water is the capital of the malt-whisky distilling industry, where for centuries there had been a stronghold at the meeting of the glens.
Dufftown was mainly built in 1817 and laid out in the shape of a cross by James Duff, the Fourth Earl of Fife.
The ruins of the 13th century Balvenie Castle, 1m north was once the largest and best preserved castles in Northern Scotland
South of town lies the 12th century church at Mortlach where a stone in the churchyard commemorates the victory over the Danes in 1010.
On the road to Alford and Rhynie climbs over the Glacks of Balloch Pass at 1197ft.
