Once known as the capital of the Black Country it has been an iron working town since the Middle Ages.
The Castle dates from the 13th century and was home to John Dudley, Duke of Northumberland. In 1553 he made his daughter-in-law Lady Jane Grey, Queen of England, but her reign was the shortest of them all lasting only nine days.
