Its Latin name ‘Salinae’ gives a hefty clue to its origin. The Romans and later the Saxons came here to produce salt, and until taking the waters went out of fashion it was a popular spa known throughout Europe.
Its salt water contains 2½ lbs of salt per gallon - ten times stronger than sea water - rivalled only by the Dead Sea - and has to be diluted to use in the popular lido.
Droitwich is probably best known for its Brine Baths and famous hotels. The Brine Baths, located off Victoria Square, have been rebuilt and are open for public use and for treatment purposes.
The Droitwich Heritage Centre houses a local history display outlining the towns fascinating development, as well as a varied programme of supporting exhibitions.
Good shopping is to be had in the town and there are several interesting old buildings in the town centre including the Parish Church of St Andrew's, rebuilt after a great fire had destroyed much of Droitwich in about 1290.
Just outside the town is the church of St. Peter's with its l4th century tower and nearby is St Peter's Manor with its astonishing 750 hole dovecote.
