Dr William Penny Brookes, inspiration behind the modern Olympic Games, was born in it was he who established an Olympian Society to promote health through fitness and started annual athletic competitions.
His Games inspired Baron Pierre de Coubertin, driving force behind establishment of the Olympics. Brookes died in 1895, one year before the first modern Olympics.
