URPoint Details
The village was built by the Asshetons, lords of the manor, who built Downham Hall in the 13th century around the village green.
The village sits on the slopes of a limestone hill, beside the old Roman road linking the forts at York and Ribchester. One of the legionaries died beside the road, and buried near where he fell. His gravestone is said to protrude from the base of a wall surrounding the village Downham Hall to the left of the gates.
The church medieval Church of St Leonard with its thick, short tower has some gargoyles of interest.
