A quiet village where Downe House stands, Charles Darwin’s home for 40 years until his death in 1882 and where he wrote The Origin of the Species and many other scientific works.
The house built mainly in the 18th century was altered and enlarged by Darwin to give him space to work and for his family of 10 children.
