Doune

URPoint Details

This old fashioned town with its church dating back to 1611 took its importance from the castle and the palace and still belongs to the Earls of Moray.

At the western end is the triangular market place an old Mercat cross where sheep and cattle fairs took place.

Newton of Doune to the east is a fine old Scots house dating back before the 16th century.

The double-arched Bridge of Teith was built in 1535 by Robert Spittal, tailor to Margaret, Queen of James IV. It is said to have been constructed to spite the ferryman who would not carry him across the river because he had left his purse at home.

There is a broch at Coldoch not far from Doune and on the Hill of Row are some Standing Stones, remains of a megalithic stone circle.
