URPoint Details

A coal-mining town on the Douglas Water, with just a fragment of an 18th century castle has an old church, Douglas Mill and an old coaching inn. An earlier castle on the site was the Douglases’ stronghold and many of their warriors are buried in the partly 12th century church of St Brides Church. The tombs include those of ‘the good Sir James of Douglas’ who was killed by the Moors in Spain in 1330 while taking the heart of Robert the Bruce to the Holy Land.
