The ruins of the castle stand high on a hill overlooking the picturesque villages of Donnington, Newbury and beyond to the south.
The castle was originally oblong with round towers at each of the four corners, square towers in two walls and a gatehouse on the third.
Built in the late 14th century, the twin-towered gatehouse of this historic castle survives amidst some impressive earthworks. The remainder was destroyed during one of the longest sieges of the 17th century Civil War, lasting nearly two years.
