Probably built by Llywelyn ab Iorwerth early in the 13th century, the castle is dominated by a massive round-towered keep to hold Owen Goch who was imprisoned here for twenty-three years for rebelling against his brother.
A solitary, round peel-tower built to defend the pass of Llanberis.
