URPoint Details
There has been a village here since Roman times, when the Roman legions were stationed at Branodunum (Brancaster) five miles down the road on the coast.
The village grew up in Saxon times on a crossroads leading to Fakenham, King’s Lynn, Heacham, Ringstead and Hunstanton.
It was known as Dry Docking because of the lack of streams although there are five ponds.
The stocks and whipping-post are outside the ‘Hare’ Inn.
A church has stood on the site of the present parish church since Saxon times.
The church of St Mary the Virgin dates from 1588 and can be seen for miles around.
