Isambard Kingdom Brunel designed the Great Western Railway to be the finest in the world. It was completed from London to Bristol in 1841, and until 1892 its trains ran on Brunel's broad gauge tracks. The Great Western retained its independence until nationalisation in 1948 and is regarded with affection by those who knew it. Now alongside Brunel's original railway, the members of the Great Western Society are recreating the golden age of the Great Western Railway at Didcot Railway Centre. It is based around the engine shed where visitors can see the collection of steam locomotives, many lovingly restored whilst others are in various stages of repair and restoration. There are also many passenger carriages and freight wagons and a GWR diesel railcar dating from 1940. There is a reconstruction of Brunel's original broad gauge trackwork and in the locomotive works the Firefly Trust is building a reproduction of the broad gauge Firefly locomotive of 1839. A country station has been created
