Derwentcote Steel Furnace, (EH), 10m SW of Newcastle on A694 between Rowland's Gill and Hamsterley. Open April to end September, daily 10am-6pm. Small admission charge. Parking.
The Derwent Valley steel works were once the centre of the British steel industry, the Derwentcote, built in the 18th century, is the earliest and most complete authentic steel making furnace to have survived. Closed during the 1870's and allowed to fall into disrepair, the furnace has been restored and opened to the public including a small exhibition
