Sitting beside the banks of the River Teviot and beyond the river on the summit of the steep Minto Crags is the ruined castle of Fatlips dating from the 16th century.
To the south rises the dark Ruberslaw at 1,392ft a Covenanters retreat, and to the east flows the Rule Water.Sir James Murray the celebrated lexicographer who worked for many years on the New English Dictionary was born here in 1776.
The village was the birthplace of John Leyden (1776-1811), poet and friend of Sir Walter Scott.
