The castle built in 1282 for Edward I and close to the castle gate stood a cottage where Herbert M Stanley was born in 1841.
It was Stanley who found Dr Livingstone and greeted him with the famous line ‘Dr Livingstone, I presume’.
The town has many historic buildings including the 16th century Town Hall and the Golden Lion Inn with a 15th century timber-framed archway.
