Deene Church of St Peter, (Churches Conservation Trust)
This is the church of the Brudenells, who bought Deene Park in 1514 and have lived there ever since. A large building of local stone and Collyweston slates, its tall west tower and broach spire probably date from the 13th century or earlier. In 1868 the widow of the 7th Earl of Cardigan, the famed Brudenell who led the ‘Charge of the Light Brigade’, commissioned T H Wyatt to rebuild much of it. Inside, the nave and aisles are austere but the chancel was sumptuously decorated and furnished in 1890 by G F Bodley. The south chapter contains monuments to the family from 1531 onwards, but most remarkable is the splendid tomb of the 7th Earl and his wife.
