Castle via flagstone path and wooden drawbridge; gatehouse courtyard and ground floor accessible to visitors in wheelchairs. Wide spiral staircase to upper floors (one handrail) access to basement for ambulant disabled visitors is difficult. 10 minute special tape tour included in admission price. Tape tour with hearing loop included in admission price script available. Toilets not suitable for wheelchair users. Shop has two steps and narrow doorway assistance required large gate can be opened for easier access to courtyard. Crouching low and menacing, the huge rounded bastions of this austere fort, built by Henry VIII, once carried 119 guns. It is a fascinating castle to explore, with long dark passages, battlements, and a huge basement with an exhibition on England's coastal defences.
