URPoint Details

Walmer lifeboat men have attended distress calls since being established in 1856. There are an average between 20 and 30 calls in a year many of them caused by the shifting Goodwin Sands. These sand-banks are said once to have been an island that belonged to Earl Goodwin, King Harrold's father.

There are pleasure cruises to the Sands during the summer months. Between the pier and the lifeboat stations is a plaque marking the spot where Julius Caesar is said to have landed in 55BC.

Middle Street runs parallel to the promenade and is lined with old houses and narrow lanes run off it. The old quarter is said to have been the haunted smugglers.

Deal Pier, Beach Street is 1,000 ft in length was opened by the duke of Edinburgh in 1957. Nelson stayed at nearby Royal Hotel.

Goodwin Sands is the graveyard of many fine ships and seamen, these treacherous sands lie 3-1/4 miles off shore.
