URPoint Details

Five villages of Culford, Ingham, Timworth, West Stow and Wordwell form part of the Culford estate.

All the villages were mentioned in the Domesday Book and two villages that of West Stow and Ingham predate that.

The village is surrounded by farmland and was an ‘estate’ village for either Darsham Old Hall belonging to the Bedingfield family. The original hall was burnt down and rebuilt in 1600.

Darsham House was built for the Purves family in 1796, who have been great benefactors to the church of All Saints, parts of which date to Norman times.

Not far from the 17th century Garden Cottage near Darsham House where you may meet the ‘Grey Lady’ who supposedly glides from the vicarage and by the gates of Darsham House into the churchyard opposite. People who have not heard this tale before have had a feeling of her presence.

It is also said the smugglers used to hide their loot behind the church altar and that they employed a Jack O’Lantern in Devil’s lane to scare people away.
