George Stephenson’s locomotive (locomotion no 1) in September 1825 pulled the carriage’s of the first public passenger service from Shildon to Darlington and then onto Stockton.
The church of St Cuthbert just off the market place was begun in 1192 by Hugh Pudsey, Bishop of Durham on the site of a Saxon church. It is a wonderful building and is a fine example of the early English style.
