Dame Agatha Mary Clarissa Christie, Lady Mallowan, DBE (née Miller) was born on the 15th September in Torquay She was an English writerand best known for her 66 detective novels and 14 short story collections, particularly those revolving around her fictional detectives Hercule Poirot and Miss Marple. Christie also wrote the world's longest-running play, a murder mystery, The Mousetrap, and six romances under the name Mary Westmacott. In 1971 she was elevated to Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire (DBE) for her contribution to literature.
Agatha Christie country has many places to explore trails and walks where the famous writer spent much of her life. Between 1890 and 1976 she played here as a child, worked and gathered ideas that were to come to life in her best selling books with immortal characters such as Miss Marple and Hercule Poirot.
She died 12 January 1976 aged 85 in Winterbrook, Oxfordshire and is buried in the Church of St Mary, Cholsey, Oxfordshire.
