The Capital of the Kingdom of Fife, sits on the banks of the River Eden. Castlehill is the focal point and is well worth exploring and was the stronghold of the Thanes of Fife.
This Royal Burgh has a charter dating back to 1363.
The Parish church tower dates from 1415, but the spire is two centuries later. A 17th century gravestone carved with two heads and a hand recalls the murder of Martyrs
On a hill to the south is Scotstarvit Tower dating from 1579, and once the home of Sir John Scott a pioneer in map making.
Also close by is the Hill of Tarvit built in 1696 and remodelled in 1906, there are a fine collection of French and English furniture.
Comphairt means back of the top common pasture, pastureland held in common by local villagers.
